Blommer Chocolate Factory Parapet Replacement

As the General Contractor on this project, RZ is thrilled to share this project spotlight of the removal and replacement of a large section of failing parapet face brick on the Blommer Chocolate Company building located in the city of Chicago.

Whether it’s the safety of their employees, subcontractors, or the general public, RZ is serious about safety. That’s why RZ took the safety issues surrounding bricks that could potentially fall from 50-60 feet high onto the city sidewalk below very serious, Which is why after getting the approval, RZ acted fast with attaining the sidewalk closure permit and having Contractor’s Access Equipment to set up the scaffolding ASAP, not just for the project at hand, but more importantly to keep potential bricks from falling below.

Once the scaffold was in place, RZ’s Masons, Casey Masonry, started the demolition by carefully removing and hauling away the broken bricks. Naturally, any bricks that could be reused were sorted, stacked and cleaned up for reuse. Which of course, saves the company money while maintains the building’s exterior aesthetics. Additionally, once the demolition was complete, it was apparent new angle iron and steel I-beams were going to need to be replaced to get the job done right.

As you can probably imagine, removing, cleaning, and reinstalling 10 courses of brick takes time, patience and professionalism. But even amidst a few delays due to weather conditions, RZ and their team of subcontractors were able to complete the entire project in about a month, completely accident-free, and on-time.
